about us

We are Youth Hubz

At Youth Hubz, we are one team committed to supporting young people and care leavers to develop the skills and confidence they need to live independently.

Trauma-Informed Care

We prioritise the well-being of young people through a trauma-informed approach.

Person-Centered Support

We customise the support we provide to a young person to ensure we are meeting all of their needs. This is regularly reviewed with the young person and support network.

Life Skills Development

We foster personal growth through engaging activities like cooking, arts and crafts, budgeting, life stories and weekly cook and eat sessions to develop indepent living skills.

Community Engagement

We facilitate access to local services and facilities, enabling young people to explore interests, access educational resources, and engage with the community.

Our Mission and Values

  • To provide a safe environment
  • To support and prepare young people for independence
  • To develop and encourage new skills
  • To be honest and transparent
Our Mission
Our mission is to support young people towards independence by equipping them with the skills, confidence and resilience they need to successfully live independently

We provide safe, secure supported accommodation where young people can develop practical life skills, build self-belief and take increasing ownership of their future.

Everything we do is focused on helping young people make meaningful progress and prepare for independence.
Our Vision
We want every young person at Youth Hubz to feel that they belong, that they matter, that their voice is heard and that they are valued as individuals.

Our vision is for young people to leave our service feeling confident, capable and prepared for adult life, with a strong sense of identity and direction.

We believe that when young people feel safe, respected and supported, they are able to thriven to live society.
Our Ethos
Our ethos is rooted in empathy, the PACE approach (Playfulness, Acceptance, Curiosity and Empathy), and unwavering young person-centred decision making.

We believe that every young person deserves to be understood, respected and supported by reflective professionals who care deeply.

Through ongoing training and reflective practice, we equip our managers and staff to lead with compassion, respond with curiosity and create environments where both young people and staff feel safe, supported and valued.
Our Model
Our practice is informed by the PACE approach — Playfulness, Acceptance, Curiosity and Empathy — developed by Dr Dan Hughes.

PACE guides how we build trusting, emotionally safe relationships, particularly with young people who may have experienced trauma or disrupted attachments.

Through this approach, we promote emotional safety, strengthen trust and communication, respond thoughtfully to behaviour and support positive development. We combine relational practice with structured support planning and regular reviews to ensure young people make clear, measurable progress towards independence.
Safeguarding
Safeguarding is at the heart of everything we do at Youth Hubz.

We are committed to creating environments where young people feel safe, respected and protected from harm. Our approach is proactive and relationship-based, with clear procedures, strong leadership oversight and effective partnership working with local authorities and other agencies. Concerns are acted upon without delay, and young people are supported to understand risks, develop resilience and build the skills needed to keep themselves safe.

We are committed to equality, fairness and anti-discriminatory practice. Every young person is treated as an individual, and discrimination of any kind is not tolerated within our service

Safeguarding at Youth Hubz is not just about responding to incidents, it is about promoting safety, stability and positive progress every day.

April Helliwell

Team Leader
After leaving school, I worked in the textile industry for over 20 years. To support and encourage my daughter to attend college I completed an access to higher education course, where I had the chance to volunteer at a homeless shelter as part of the curriculum.

My passion for helping others then led me to start working with young people, initially in a mother and baby unit. In 2003, I joined Calderdale Council as a casual residential worker, becoming a permanent staff member in 2007. I then moved to a short break unit for children with learning disabilities in 2011, where I stayed until 2015 before changing my career path to focus more on support than care.

For the next 8 years, I had the privilege of supporting 16-18 year old care leavers, and I was even promoted to manager in 2018. It was a very rewarding experience, but I was eager for a new challenge when the opportunity to become a team leader working with Unaccompanied Asylum-Seeking Children (UASC) became available. I'm really enjoying the new experiences and the chance to support these young people as they navigate the asylum process and work towards living independently developing skills for community safety and involvement, personal hygiene, and basis English.

Outside of work, I cherish my time with my children and grandchildren. It brings me great joy to be able to spend quality time with my loved ones.
