What we do

Youth Hubz provides supported accommodation and structured support to young people aged 16 and over who are Looked After by the Local Authority.

Support is delivered through planned key work sessions, regular reviews and proportionate safeguarding oversight. Staff are available to provide guidance, reassurance and response where needed, including outside of standard working hours through our on-call arrangements.

We work in partnership with local authorities and other professionals to ensure young people are supported to make safe, successful transitions into adulthood.

    Our Mission and Values

    • To provide a safe environment
    • To support and prepare young people for independence
    • To develop and encourage new skills
    • To be honest and transparent
    Our Mission
Our mission is to support young people towards independence by equipping them with the skills, confidence and resilience they need to successfully live independently

We provide safe, secure supported accommodation where young people can develop practical life skills, build self-belief and take increasing ownership of their future.

Everything we do is focused on helping young people make meaningful progress and prepare for independence.
    Our Vision
We want every young person at Youth Hubz to feel that they belong, that they matter, that their voice is heard and that they are valued as individuals.

Our vision is for young people to leave our service feeling confident, capable and prepared for adult life, with a strong sense of identity and direction.

We believe that when young people feel safe, respected and supported, they are able to thriven to live society.
    Our Ethos
Our ethos is rooted in empathy, the PACE approach (Playfulness, Acceptance, Curiosity and Empathy), and unwavering young person-centred decision making.

We believe that every young person deserves to be understood, respected and supported by reflective professionals who care deeply.

Through ongoing training and reflective practice, we equip our managers and staff to lead with compassion, respond with curiosity and create environments where both young people and staff feel safe, supported and valued.

    Our Approach

As Director of Youth Hubz, I believe every young person deserves more than accommodation they deserve to feel heard, respected and genuinely supported. Our approach is trauma-informed and centred around the individual. We do not make decisions for young people; we work alongside them.

I am passionate about creating environments where young people feel safe, valued and confident enough to shape their own future. Their voice guides our practice, and their progress drives our ambition
    Gary Barker
    Director
Our approach is trauma-informed, person-centred and guided by the voice of the young person. We actively involve young people in shaping their support, from setting goals to making decisions about their living environment and daily routines.

Each young person has an individual support plan that identifies the practical skills and personal development areas needed to prepare for independence. Structured key work sessions provide regular opportunities to review progress, reflect on challenges and plan next steps in partnership with the young person and their professional network.

We support young people to develop essential life skills, including budgeting, cooking, maintaining their living space, planning meals and managing personal responsibilities. Our aim is to build confidence through consistency, encouragement and clear boundaries.

Our practice is informed by the PACE approach (Playfulness, Acceptance, Curiosity and Empathy), which guides how we build trusting, emotionally safe relationships. Staff respond thoughtfully to behaviour, recognising that past experiences may shape how young people express themselves.

We work collaboratively with local authorities and partner agencies to ensure support remains proportionate, safeguarding-focused and centred on positive progress. Progress is measured through clear support planning, regular reviews and meaningful involvement from young people.

Above all, we aim to create stable, supportive environments where young people feel safe, valued and increasingly confident in their ability to live independently.

    Our History

Youth Hubz began in 2019 with a simple belief: that small, high-quality and homely provision offers the best foundation for young people transitioning from care.

Founded as a family-run organisation, Youth Hubz was built on strong values, personal accountability and a long-term commitment to improving outcomes for young people.

We started with one three-bedroom property and a small, dedicated team. As our work developed, we were increasingly asked to support young people whose needs required thoughtful planning, specialist input and strong partnership working. By working closely with local authorities and specialist services, we built a reputation for providing stable, well-managed placements where young people could make meaningful progress.

Over the past seven years, we have grown steadily and responsibly. Today, Youth Hubz supports young people across a range of properties designed to promote independence and stability.

Our growth has been driven by trust, outcomes and demand — not speed. While we have expanded, we remain committed to maintaining small, supportive environments where relationships, safeguarding and high standards come first.

Alongside Youth Hubz, we have developed a sister care company providing children’s homes. Each service operates within its own regulatory framework while sharing the same core values of safety, respect and aspiration for every young person.

We are proud of how far we have come over the past seven years, but our focus remains the same as it was in 2019: creating safe, structured environments where young people can build confidence and move towards independent and fulfilling futures.

    Workforce

At Youth Hubz, our staff are central to the quality and safety of our service.
We recruit carefully through safer recruitment processes to ensure that our team reflects the values, professionalism and commitment required to support young people effectively. All staff complete a structured induction and probation period before working independently.

Our workforce receives regular supervision, annual appraisal and ongoing professional development. Training covers safeguarding, risk management, PACE-informed practice, exploitation awareness, health and safety, and relevant legislation to ensure staff remain confident and competent in their roles.

We place strong emphasis on reflective practice, clear professional boundaries and continuous learning. This ensures our team is equipped to respond thoughtfully, proportionately and safely to the needs of the young people we support.

    Policies and procedures

Youth Hubz maintains a comprehensive suite of policies and procedures to ensure safe, consistent and high-quality practice across our service.

Our policies are regularly reviewed to remain aligned with current legislation, regulatory requirements and best practice guidance. They support clear professional standards, accountability and the wellbeing of the young people we support.

Copies of relevant policies are available upon request. Please contact us via our main office details if you require further information.

Our staff members are fully insured through employer’s liability insurance cover and full public liability insurance, proportionate with the level and extent of activities undertaken.

    April Helliwell

    Team Leader
After leaving school, I worked in the textile industry for over 20 years. To support and encourage my daughter to attend college I completed an access to higher education course, where I had the chance to volunteer at a homeless shelter as part of the curriculum.

My passion for helping others then led me to start working with young people, initially in a mother and baby unit. In 2003, I joined Calderdale Council as a casual residential worker, becoming a permanent staff member in 2007. I then moved to a short break unit for children with learning disabilities in 2011, where I stayed until 2015 before changing my career path to focus more on support than care.

For the next 8 years, I had the privilege of supporting 16-18 year old care leavers, and I was even promoted to manager in 2018. It was a very rewarding experience, but I was eager for a new challenge when the opportunity to become a team leader working with Unaccompanied Asylum-Seeking Children (UASC) became available. I'm really enjoying the new experiences and the chance to support these young people as they navigate the asylum process and work towards living independently developing skills for community safety and involvement, personal hygiene, and basis English.

Outside of work, I cherish my time with my children and grandchildren. It brings me great joy to be able to spend quality time with my loved ones.
